"It brings me joy to say that I completed my third album," he told listeners. "I ain't got no beef with 50. All that [stuff] was on wax. I never shot at him, he never shot at me. Both of us done said a lot. But we're not Biggie and Pac. I appreciate the homie for helping me on my way up."

The Roots - Game Theory (2006)

Game Theory is the seventh studio album from Philadelphia hip hop band The Roots, their first on Def Jam Records, which like the group's previous label, Geffen Records, is part of the Universal Music Group. It was released on August 29, 2006 to a great deal of critical acclaim.[1] The first single, "Don't Feel Right," was released online in May 2006 and is available for free download on the group's MySpace page. The album features guest appearances from Peedi Peedi and returning Roots MCs Malik B. and Dice Raw. The album closes with a song titled "Can't Stop This", an eight minute tribute to the late J Dilla.

Described by Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson as "very mature, serious, and very dark". Unlike their two previous efforts, Phrenology and The Tipping Point, Game Theory combines The Roots progressive tendencies and lush, jazz influenced hip-hop into a more homogenous and cohesive recording than past efforts had shown. In what could be a salute to a fellow progressive band, The Roots sample Radiohead's "You and Whose Army?" on the track "Atonement".

The subject material for Game Theory follows the more serious tone of the album, with topics ranging from the war in Iraq to violence in music. ?uestlove was quoted as saying "There was too much going on that we couldn’t just sit back and not speak on it." In accordance with its more-serious tone, the album heavily references Public Enemy's highly-political It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back on its lead track "False Media".

Quoted from Rollingstone.com: "In this day and age, I'm kind of noticing that nobody in urban music really has the balls to just stop partying for one second," says ?uestlove. "I mean, partying is good and whatnot, and it's cool to get down, but I really think that 2006 called for a very serious record. This ain't the Debbie Downer record, or the political, save-the-world record, but this is definitely not the MC-based, battle-themed album that the Roots have been known for. This is our most serious record to date."

The album was nominated for Best Rap Album at the 2007 Grammy Awards, but lost to Release Therapy by Ludacris.

Digital Underground - ..Cuz A d.u. Party Don't Stop!! (2008)

Digital Underground is an alternative rap group hailing from Oakland, California, who played a big part in giving West Coast rap the spotlight. Their leader was Greg “Shock G” Jacobs, who also went by the stage name of Humpty Hump. Jacobs spent most of his youth in New York City and southern Florida. Heavily influenced by the various funk bands of the 1970s, Digital Underground sampled their music frequently, which quickly became a defining element of West Coast rap. Their ‘alternative’ status owes much to their unabashedly spaced-out image, which lay in contrast to the gangster rap that most west coast acts focused on. The group's original image was set up to be a tribute to social activists The Black Panthers, but when Public Enemy became a prominent band, Jacobs chose to take the group's image in a more whimsical direction, that of an updated Parliament-Funkadelic for the hip-hop audience. Jacobs designed detailed album covers and cartoon-laced liner notes, a homage to Parliament-Funkadelic album designs. They are also notable for catapulting member Tupac Shakur into the spotlight.

MC Hammer - Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em (1990)

Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em is the second album by MC Hammer, released in 1990 by Capitol Records. The album was a #1 smash hit for 21 weeks, due primarily to the runaway single, "U Can't Touch This". The album was notable for sampling high-profile artists and giving some of these artists a new fanbase. "U Can't Touch This" sampled "Super Freak" by Rick James; "Dancin' Machine" sampled the Jackson 5; "Have You Seen Her" is a semi-cover of the Chi-Lites song; "Help the Children" interpolates Marvin Gaye's "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)"; "Pray" and "She's Soft and Wet" sample the Prince hits "When Doves Cry" and "Soft and Wet" respectively. The album raised rap music to a new level of popularity. It was the first hip-hop album certified diamond by the RIAA for sales of over ten million, and remains among the genre's all-time best-selling albums.

Despite its enormous success, it received mixed critical reviews from people who thought it relied too much on sampling past hits and was overly pop-oriented.
